How I’m relating Human & Robots in a Greek Tourism Startup.

The most mind blowing experience ever.

The story that robots are going to rule the world is becoming more and more observable each time I open my facebook feed.

Altho robots are becoming very smart and indeed started taking our jobs, this has already happened long ago on factories and industries.

We don’t have to fear the change, because we already know that it is coming. The thing is: if the process is going to change in this upcoming era of intelligence, then those preparing for the change are in a far better position than those that refuse to see the new opportunities emerging.

Everyday new models and techniques are created by experienced designers doing their researches. The process of organizing the insights to answer simple questions of why, what, and how is motivating a deeper philosophy conversation relating technology and our relationships with it.

By observing some patterns in my internship at Butlair, a startup that gives personal guidance to tourists visiting the greek islands, I could see some analogies in challenges already solved by the big players of the world.

Something magical is going on in this place!

Notice Repeating Patterns

Patterns usually exist, and there’s a reason for that. It’s often related to a convention of something that works really well.

It reflects things that are working so those are the things that we want to leverage and make even better.

Currently, the company is providing a fabulous service to their clients. The designers were able to learn enough to create an appropriate solution for every kind of problem that a tourist might have while visiting Greece.

With that in mind, I came here to help expand their vision of how things should be and could be.

By learning my way through goal-driven artificial intelligence and machine learning, I am discovering how much I don’t know.

Grounding myself in the problems and needs of the startup, I’m trying to come up with a recommendation system that could save the local experts a lot of time and energy when seeking for the best restaurant for your 12-person family that wants to explore Athens as locals.

“Ask a question and get an answer was the limit of our imagination.”

Know What You Don’t Know

I think that when it comes to tourism, and other fields as well, these “robots” can really make a difference in what the world already recognize as common.

But the goal is not about making the world exclusively robotized. Rather than that, it is cooperating with artificial intelligence in common tasks. Focusing on making a human smarter, watching what people are doing, looking for difficulties, solutions, and capturing these thoughts.

Tourists searching for general information on Google or Tripadvisor can be easily overwhelmed.

This means a lot of information to digest.

Having a human-expert ready to help you by Whatsapp or Fb messager is somehow more comforting than having to go trough several 4 stars reviews.

Because the local-expert is a friendly helper with your best interests in mind.

My End Goal?

Present how humans can work with machines to build a more personalized travel experience.

Even knowing that I’m am here at the office as a volunteer only for 9 weeks, the amount of leadership wisdom acquired in this experience is not available in any other context.

All these tools and options that I have for discovering what is appropriate is surely making me grow, not only by being immersed in another culture but by observing actions, the environment, the interactions, objects and, users.

The big picture here:

Articulating the points in the journey to explain to somebody what are the things that I feel are most important to extract when it comes to using technology in our favor. This creates a more thoughtful narrative, and it’s all about being a better and clear communicator.
